Welcome to Changing Europe!

Each year the Changing Europe Summer School brings together 20 to 30 young academics (i.e. mainly doctoral students from disciplines like political science, economics, sociology, social anthropology, law, geography and history) working on issues related to countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Participation in the Summer School gives them a chance to present and discuss their research projects and to get better integrated into the academic community. Each year the Summer School takes place in a different European city. Within the context of post-socialist changes and European integration each Summer School has a specific thematic focus.

The core of the Summer School consists of the presentation of doctoral research projects and their discussion with senior researchers of international repute in their respective fields. In addition there are several sessions with experts on grants, access to information, publication strategies and policy consulting. The sessions are framed by lectures, excursions and other activities designed to give participants the opportunity to socialize and establish contacts.

Summer School participants are selected with the help of international referees. All participants submit a written presentation of their research project, which is published on the website of the Summer School, so that the participants can get acquainted with all projects in advance. Selected papers are published in an edited volume in the Changing Europe book series.

The participants of all Summer Schools are integrated into a network of young social scientists, based on the Changing Europe mailing list.
